Obituary for John Gaydos

John Gaydos 1905 - 2003

John J. Gaydos, 98, of 813 N. Jackson St., died at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen’s Church, the Rev. Jeffrey Lawrence officiating. Music will be provided by St. Stephen’s Grade School Choir under the direction of Jo Ann Cave. Songs will include “How Great Thou Art,” “Krasna Si Maria,” “Ave Maria,” and “Amazing Grace.


Burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Ron Jr., Daniel, Kevin and Siobhan Elias; Frank Jr. and Kenneth Gaydos. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren, George Jr., Steve Jr., John III, Fred, Joseph, and Michael Gaydos.


Visitation will be 9-10:45 a.m. Saturday at Solon, Baker & Telford Funeral Home.


Born Jan. 11, 1905, in Streator, he was the son of John and Mary (Organista) Gaydos. He married Margaret Majerchin on Jan. 5, 1927, in St. Stephen’s Church by the late Monsignor Louis Biskupski. She died July 22, 2002.


Surviving are daughters, Louise (Mrs. Ronald) Elias and Helen Gaydos, both of Streator; sons, Frank Gaydos and George (Barbara) Gaydos, both of Streator, and Steven (Dorothy) Gaydos of Rhinelander, Wis.; a sister, Emma Taylor, Bourbonnais; 23 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Raymond Brewer, Streator.


Preceding him in death were his parents; daughters, Mary Ann Brewer and Delores Gaydos; son, John Gaydos Jr.; sisters, Mary Clark, Agnes Hoffner, Annie Hoffner, Clara Schultz and Susan Schultz; and a brother, Andrew Gaydos.


He worked as a machine operator for Anthony Company for 29 years, retiring in 1969. He also played the violin for many years in several different bands.

He was a member of AARP.
